Grants for the roof in 2026: what is left?
By the Toiture Wash team · Updated on 20 October 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer. No Region gives a grant for roof moss removal, cleaning, water repellent or painting, and this work is not tax-deductible. The aid that remains targets insulation and renovation: loans in Wallonia since 1 October 2026, the Mijn VerbouwPremie in Flanders for some households, and no Renolution grant open in Brussels for 2025 and 2026 invoices. Situation as recorded on 2 October 2026.
At a glance
| Moss removal, cleaning, water repellent, painting | Roof insulation and renovation | |
|---|---|---|
| Wallonia | nothing | grants ended on 30 September 2026, Rénopack and Rénoprêt loans since 1 October 2026; tax reduction for roof insulation |
| Brussels | nothing | no Renolution grant open for 2025 and 2026 invoices |
| Flanders | expressly excluded | Mijn VerbouwPremie, with new insulation, for income categories 3 and 4 |
Wallonia: from grants to loans
The temporary Habitation grants scheme covered the roof from 14 February 2025 to 30 September 2026: replacement of the roof covering (€4 per m² base amount), roof structure work (appropriation de la charpente, €100 base), replacement of gutters and downpipes (€40 base), roof insulation (€20 per m² base, €26 with a bio-based insulant), with amounts multiplied by 2 to 6 depending on income. Moss removal, cleaning, water repellent and painting were not included.
Since 1 October 2026, Wallonia has replaced these grants with loans: Rénopack, a zero-interest loan with a reduction in the amount to repay for income categories C1 to C3, and Rénoprêt. They target homes rated G or F on the energy performance certificate (EPC) that will reach at least class D, and those rated E that will reach at least class C; the roof is among the eligible work. To find out how and when to apply, contact the Walloon Region. Households that committed before 14 February 2025 can still, subject to conditions, apply under the former schemes until 30 September 2027.
Tax reduction for roof insulation. Residents of the Walloon Region are entitled to a tax reduction of 30% of roof insulation expenses, incl. VAT, with a ceiling per home of €4,020 for 2025 income and €4,120 for 2026 income. Only the insulation material and its installation by a contractor count, in a home occupied for at least 5 years. Simply replacing tiles, a moss removal or a water repellent does not qualify.
Brussels: no grant open
The Renolution grants now only concern applications whose final invoice dates from 2024, and they are closed. On 2 October 2026, no government decision had created a new aid: no Renolution grant for 2025 or 2026 invoices, nor for a moss removal. Before the suspension, they covered roof insulation and the roof covering, never moss removal.
Flanders: the Mijn VerbouwPremie, without the cleaning
The Mijn VerbouwPremie for the roof covers insulation and, with new insulation, renovation: structure, underlay, roof covering, dormers, roof windows, gutters and downpipes, chimney. Cleaning of the roof covering and coats of paint or waterproof coating are expressly excluded.
For applications submitted since 1 July 2025:
| Income category | Grant for the roof |
|---|---|
| 4 | up to 50% of the invoice excl. VAT, at most €5,750 |
| 3 | 35%, at most €4,025 |
| 1 and 2 | no more roof grant since 1 March 2026 |
The invoice taken into account ranges from €1,000 to €11,500 excl. VAT, and the work must be done by a contractor. A supplement exists for asbestos removal combined with insulation: see Does my roof contain asbestos?
What really lowers the bill for a moss removal
- VAT: a reduced rate applies to some homes; your quote states the rate used.
- Combining the work: gutter cleaning is already included in the moss removal, and travel and set-up costs are not charged on work of €1,000 or more excl. VAT.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a grant for removing moss from your roof?
No, in none of the three Regions. Flanders even expressly excludes cleaning of the roof covering from its roof grant.
Is moss removal tax-deductible?
No. The FPS Finance (SPF Finances) list of tax benefits includes nothing for moss removal or roof cleaning. The only tax reduction tied to the roof targets insulation, in the Walloon Region.
Is there a grant for gutters?
For their replacement only: in Wallonia until 30 September 2026, and in Flanders with new roof insulation. Gutter cleaning is not subsidised anywhere.
